Mailstore

Mailstore is a service that allows for long-term retrieval of email when it is used in conjunction with an effective backup solution.

Mailstore retains a pool of all incoming and outgoing mail from your business for a configurable period, normally 4-8 weeks. Files are stored on a per-message basis in folders for each day of the month. The service also enables the user to retrieve any messages inadvertently deleted or lost. When used with an effective historical backup process, such as backing up to tape at least once a month, Mailstore can make it possible to retrieve mail over a much longer term.

The mail headers of each email, its location on disk and its cryptographic hash are all stored in an SQL database, which acts as a key to all stored historical email. It also stores files in a structured format on disk. In the event that a specific email is required for evidence, Mailstore can provide reasonable proof of its validity.
